“Employment Opportunity in the Handloom Industry of West Bengal (W.B): A Study on Focusing Nadia District”

Abstract: Handloom industry is the second largest cottage industry on behalf of providing employment opportunities, next to agriculture in India. East Zone (EZ) of India being occupying 75% total handloom worker of India is treated as 1st handloom worker prominent zone. West Bengal is the second handloom worker prominent state among all states of East Zone (EZ) in India where handloom industry plays an important role of Bengal’s economy among different types of cottage industries. Nadia district is the first handloom worker prominent district in West Bengal. The main objective of this paper is to make an analysis of the trend of handloom worker employment and the growth of handloom workers by focusing on Nadia District of West Bengal. On behalf of several handloom census reports and annual reports of textile industry, the trend of handloom worker employment and the growth of employment of handloom worker are dissimilar. The trend of employment is downward in India and in West Bengal and upward in Nadia. And the gwowth of employment are upward in India and in West Bengal and downward in Nadia. There are the opposite direction between employment entity and their growth rate. The average growth rate of employed handloom workers in Nadia district is larger than in West Bengal and in India. The trend of handloom worker’s employment prospect in handloom sector of Nadia District is uppermost till now. Here, the paper principally recommends special measures like financial literacy programme, handloom worker awareness campaign, market exposure to improve the employment growth in handloom industry.
