Title

A PILOT STUDY ON EFFECTIVENESS OF CONSTRUCTIVE APPROACH ON ACHIEVEMENT IN ENGLISH OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENT IN KOLKATA

Abstract

This pilot study examines the effectiveness of a constructivist approach on the achievement of secondary school students in English in Kolkata. The growing emphasis on constructivist teaching strategies in educational contexts underscores the need to evaluate their impact on language learning outcomes. This study involved a sample of 60 secondary school students from two schools in Kolkata, divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental group engaged in a constructivist learning environment characterized by collaborative activities, problem-solving tasks, and real-world applications of language skills, while the control group received traditional instruction focused on rote memorization and direct instruction. Pre- and post-intervention assessments were conducted to measure students' English language proficiency, focusing on reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. The data were analyzed using quantitative methods, including descriptive statistics and inferential analyses to determine the significance of the differences between the groups. The findings reveal that students in the experimental group demonstrated a statistically significant improvement in their English language achievement compared to their counterparts in the control group. The results highlight the positive impact of constructivist methods on enhancing students' engagement, motivation, and overall language proficiency. Furthermore, qualitative feedback from students and teachers indicated that constructivist practices fostered a more interactive and enjoyable learning experience. The study concludes that implementing constructivist teaching strategies in English language education can lead to improved academic performance among secondary school students. It recommends further research with larger sample sizes and diverse educational settings to validate these findings and explore the long-term effects of constructivist approaches on language learning outcomes. This study contributes to the ongoing discourse on effective pedagogical practices in language education and the importance of adapting teaching methods to meet the diverse needs of learners.
