Title

Enhancing Adventure Travel Connectivity with Long-Range Communication for Solo Bikers

Abstract

Abstract: Adventure travel, particularly solo biking presents exhilarating experiences but comes with the challenge of maintaining reliable connectivity in remote and challenging environments. The need for long-range communication solutions is paramount to ensure the safety and group cohesion of solo bikers during their journeys. This paper explores various technologies and methods for establishing strong and reliable long-range communication between bikes and their tracking devices. The use of satellite communication is highlighted as a robust option for global coverage, ensuring bikers can stay connected regardless of their geographical location. Satellite technology offers a reliable means of transmitting data and maintaining real-time connectivity among group members, even in remote and off-grid areas. In addition to satellite communication, long-range radio devices, such as UHF and VHF radios, provide an effective means of maintaining communication over several miles. These radios are well-suited for adventure travel scenarios where cellular networks may not be available. The implementation of mesh networks, LoRa technology, and Bluetooth mesh for bikes in close proximity allows for extended communication range while conserving power. These low-power, long-range solutions create a network where bikes can relay data to maintain connectivity in a cost-effective and efficient manner. Furthermore, the paper discusses the application of GPS-based position reporting to enable location updates and data sharing over extended distances, improving situational awareness among group members. To bring this innovative solution to the adventure travel market, we propose the development of dedicated tracking software that integrates these long-range communication methods. This software will provide solo bikers with a user-friendly platform to track their positions, set preferences, and receive alerts while maintaining strong and reliable connectivity. In conclusion, this paper addresses the critical need for long-range communication in solo biking adventures and proposes a comprehensive solution that leverages satellite communication, long-range radios, mesh networks, and GPS-based reporting. The development of user-friendly tracking software will serve as a practical means to connect solo bikers, enhance safety, and foster group cohesion during their journeys in remote and challenging environments.
