Title

Phenotypic Characterization of Candida Species Clinical isolates: A Study from National Medical College, Birgunj, Nepal

Abstract

Candidiasis is an infection caused by Candida spp. that can be dangerous, particularly for individuals with compromised immune systems or those who have undergone surgery. In order to avoid contracting this illness, it is necessary to take appropriate precautions and to have a comprehensive understanding of the prevalence and infectious properties of the pathogen responsible for it. Candidiasis infection caused by Candida Spp. in our body and which is a dangerous illness occurred in compromised immune system individuals and undergone surgery patients. As its dangerous, so prevention should be taken. Materials & Methods: To isolate the Candida species, from various clinical samples the study used the KOH method, the Germ Tube Test, SDA and Candida CHROMagar and the tests were carried out at the Department of Microbiology, National Medical College, Birgunj, Nepal, between 1 st April 2022 and 31 st March 2023. Results: Out of the patients who tested positive for Candida infection, 82.6% of female patients were found to have candidiasis, while only 17.39% of male patients tested positive for this condition. Additionally, the study revealed that candidiasis was more prevalent in females aged 41-50 years and in males aged 71-80 years. Notably, candidiasis caused by C. albicans, C. glabrata, and C. tropicalis was more common among the infected patients. Conclusion: C. albicans leads to candidiasis in middle-aged women, necessitating adequate hygiene and government intervention through street plays and advertisements
