Title

CASTE SYSTEM AND EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHERS IN JHARKHAND

Abstract

This study investigates the relationship between the caste system and emotional intelligence (EI) among secondary school teachers in Jharkhand, India. The caste system, a deeply entrenched social structure in India, has historically influenced various aspects of life, including education. Emotional intelligence, a crucial attribute for effective teaching, plays a significant role in teacher-student interactions and overall educational outcomes.Using a mixed-methods approach, this research combines quantitative assessments of emotional intelligence with qualitative insights from interviews and focus groups. A sample of secondary school teachers from diverse caste backgrounds was selected to explore the impact of caste identity on emotional intelligence and teaching practices.Quantitative data were collected using standardized EI assessment tools, revealing variations in EI levels across different caste groups. Qualitative data provided a deeper understanding of how caste identity influences teachers’ emotional responses and their professional interactions. The findings indicate significant caste-based differences in emotional intelligence, which affect teachers' ability to manage classroom dynamics and support student development. The study highlights the need for targeted emotional intelligence training programs and policy interventions to address caste-based disparities. By emphasizing the intersection of socio-cultural factors and emotional intelligence, this research aims to contribute to more equitable educational practices and enhance the overall effectiveness of secondary education in Jharkhand.
