Title

Two Attrition-Heavy Years in Indian Start-Ups: Understanding the Landscape

Abstract

India and globe noticed massive upswing in start-up since a decade with the drastic change in technology and young minds attitude towards entrepreneurship. Indians start-ups rapidly reached to valuation worth of $1 Billion plus with investments from private entities creating a vast market opportunity by getting a tag as unicorn. Fact is that after the covid-19 pandemic start-ups faced a down trend in terms of investments, growth opportunity and various other external problems affected its growth. Start-ups struggled to sustain but couldn’t, to keep its self alive the firms opted for restructuring and cost cutting that ended to huge layoffs for the year 2022 & 2023. Some of the start-ups had a boon with the pandemic situation and some really had a bane. Facing a cut throat competition the companies balanced in getting funding at different stages from venture capitalists but funding alone will not help to grow but it needs several other opportunities too. This paper involves study relating to causes, reasons for the layoffs in particular years and total number of layoffs happened overall & the different investment stages that took high job cuts in Indian start-ups. The study is completely based on the secondary data from a start-up media and intelligence platform.
