Optical spectroscopy methods that give clear and meaningful measurements of tissue properties are very useful for studying, diagnosing, predicting, and treating different types of cancer. Recent advancements in techniques that convert the measured light reflectance and fluorescence from tissue into important cancer-related factors—like blood vessel volume, oxygen levels, the extent of the extracellular matrix, metabolic states, and cell growth—have greatly improved the field of tissue optical spectroscopy. In the past three years, there has been a significant rise in the number of publications reporting quantitative results from tissue spectroscopy in the UV-visible wavelength range. This includes new studies that connect these optical measurements with independent tests, such as immunohistochemistry, which will likely help these technologies gain more acceptance in clinical settings.
