Title

Empowering Abilities: NEP 2020 and the Role of Inclusive Physical Education for Holistic Growth

Abstract

The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 envisions a transformative, inclusive, and equitable education system, emphasizing holistic development for all, including Persons with Disabilities (PwD). While NEP 2020 addresses several critical aspects of education for PwD, its focus on Physical Education and sports for holistic growth requires greater attention. Physical Education is a vital platform for PwD, promoting physical fitness, emotional well-being, intellectual growth, and social integration. This paper critically examines the provisions of NEP 2020 concerning Physical Education for PwD, highlighting the gaps and exploring opportunities to enhance inclusivity. Key challenges, such as limited infrastructure, a lack of trained educators, societal stigma, and financial constraints, are analyzed. Drawing on global best practices and Indian success stories, actionable strategies are proposed, including integrating adaptive Physical Education into mainstream curricula, enhancing inclusive sports infrastructure, and fostering para-sports as a career pathway. The study emphasizes the need for targeted policies, cross-sector collaboration, and dedicated funding to make inclusive Physical Education a reality. By addressing these gaps, NEP 2020 can unlock the transformative potential of sports and Physical Education for PwD, fostering their wholesome development and contributing to India's vision of Viksit Bharat—an inclusive and developed nation.
