This paper provides a comprehensive survey of blockchain technology, reviewing its design, consensus mechanisms, scalability challenges, security considerations, and privacy enhancements. We also explore the convergence of blockchain with emerging technologies such as IoT, AI, and 5G/6G. Finally, we highlight open challenges and propose future research directions for realizing the full potential of blockchain technology. A systematic review of blockchain literature is conducted, covering core architectural components, various consensus mechanisms, scalability solutions, security and privacy enhancements, and integration with emerging technologies such as the Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence etc. Blockchain technology demonstrates significant potential across diverse application domains, yet it faces persistent challenges related to scalability, interoperability, energy efficiency, privacy preservation, and regulatory compliance. This survey provides a consolidated overview of the current state of blockchain technology while identifying emerging trends and strategic research opportunities. It serves as a valuable reference for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers aiming to advance the development and adoption of blockchain-based systems. This paper contributes to the blockchain research community by offering a consolidated and up-to-date overview of technological trends, critical challenges, and prospective research opportunities.
