Title

Understanding Nationhood and Governance in the Ideology of Deendayal Upadhyay

Abstract

Deendayal Upadhyay was a visionary thinker who challenged the dominance of Western ideologies by presenting a uniquely Indian framework for political, social, and economic life. His philosophy of Integral Humanism redefined nation-building by placing Indian culture, identity, and spirituality at the heart of governance and development. This paper explores the ideas of Deendayal Upadhyay and his concept of Integral Humanism. It focuses on how his ideas contribute to nation-building in post-independence India. Upadhyay believed that Western ideologies like capitalism and socialism are not suitable for India because they are based only on materialism. He argued that India should follow its own path based on its culture, identity, and traditions. According to him, national identity is the foundation for genuine independence and development. He stressed the importance of Bhartiya culture, which looks at life in a holistic way, connecting the individual, society, and nature. Upadhyay also redefined the idea of the nation (Rashtra) as a spiritual and cultural unit, not just a political one. His thoughts offer an alternative to Western political models and support the idea of self-reliance through native knowledge systems. This paper aims to study how the ideas of Deendayal Upadhyay can help in building a strong and self-confident nation based on its own values and traditions.
