Title

The Interplay Between Culture and Commerce in Indian Traditions: A Study of Muhurat Trading in the Indian Stock Market

Abstract

This study delves into the cultural and economic dimensions of Muhurat trading, a centuries-old ceremony performed at the Indian stock market, that blends traditional customs with contemporary finance on Diwali. The study investigates the intrinsic relationship between investor behavior and market mood. This also examines who this tradition influences the investor sentiments and their decision-making patterns. The study investigates whether Muhurat trading causes statistically significant changes in average stock returns compared to regular trading days. The study consists of twelve years data from Nifty 50 from 2013-2024. Through analysis of the interaction between cultural heritage and business practice, the results indicates that, Muhurat Trading mostly has cultural and symbolic value and has little effect on average returns in terms of money. It has only a minimal financial impact on the average returns. Even though they experience more volatility the mean returns don’t have significant difference from the regular days. The Paper concludes that there is no appreciable difference in the returns prior to, during or after the muhurat trading day. It has only a ceremonial impact not a financial one.
