Title

Knowledge and Attitude on Premarital Counselling among Unmarried Adults at selected community area in Tamil Nadu.

Abstract

The background of the study was that premarital counseling involved providing guidance to couples before marriage, aiming to help them recognize potential areas of disagreement that might lead to future conflicts. It serves as a tool to nurture a strong bond in the relationship. Viewing relationships as investments, the more effort you invest, the greater the growth and benefits you’ll reap. Additionally, premarital counseling serves as a preventive measure against hereditary diseases by offering interventions for identified risks, genetic consultations, nutritional guidance, behavioural advice, and contraception counseling. The objectives were to assess the understanding and attitude regarding premarital counseling among single individuals, correlate understanding and attitude concerning premarital counseling among single individuals, and find out the relationship between understanding and attitude concerning premarital counseling among single individuals within chosen population characteristics. The materials and methods used for this study followed a quantitative descriptive design, which was conducted in selected community areas in Chengalpattu district, Tamil Nadu. A total of 99 unmarried adults (both male and female) from rural areas participated. Data were gathered through self structured and standardized questionnaires. Descriptive and inferential statistical methods were used for analysis. The results indicated that 1.0% had adequate knowledge, 89.9% of participants had moderate knowledge and 9.1% had inadequate knowledge. A majority, 73.7%, exhibited moderately favourable attitude, while 17.2% held favourable attitude and 9.1% had unfavourable attitude. The correlation and coefficient between knowledge and attitude were r = 0.172. The study concluded that research needed to focus on the impact of marital disharmony and the failure of a happy married life. Public education initiatives should be implemented concerning premarital counseling. Policies should be formulated to arrange premarital counseling before marriage.
