Title

NATIONAL FOOD SECURITY MISSION (NFSM) IN IMPROVING AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTIVITY OF SELECTED CROP MAIZE IN ANDHRA PRADESH

Abstract

Abstract: Food production is the base for food security. The FAO defines it as: “Food Security as a situation that exists when all people, at all times, have physical, social and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life.” According to the report of the Food and Agriculture Organisation on ‘The State of Food Insecurity in World’ brought out during the year 2019, 820 million people did not have enough to eat in 2018, up from 811 million in the previous year, which is the third year of increase in a row. To study the trends in the area, production, and productivity of maize in the NFSM districts in Andhra Pradesh. To analyse the socio-economic and agriculture profile of the selected districts. To assess the impact of NFSM on input use, production and income among the beneficiary farmers of selected crops. The study is based on Primary and Secondary data for selected Maize crop in the state of Andhra Pradesh. A multi-stage sampling design was used to select NFSM beneficiaries and non-beneficiaries of maize farmers. The study covers two NFSM districts viz. Guntur and Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh state according to highest and lowest maize production among NFSM districts as per NFSM study methodology. Table-2 shows that paddy, maize, green gram, black gram groundnut, cotton and vegetables were the crops grown by NFSM and Non-NFSM HHs. In case of NFSM HHs, the yield (40 q/acre.) and net returns (Rs. 23500/acre) were found maximum in case of maize, while minimum yield (6 q/acre) was obtained in case of black gram. as well as net returns(Rs. 14078/acre) was found maximum in maize in case Non-NFSM HHs also, while minimum net returns(Rs. 4200/acre) was found in case of black gram under Non-NFSM HHs. Only a few documents were required to avail the subsidy 87.50 per cent of total maize beneficiaries 27.50 per cent 25.00 per cent of beneficiary farmers said lack of institutional funding 35.00 per cent of beneficiary farmers said lack of capacity building/technical advice is provided under the program responded that the subsidy was paid only after purchase 30.83 per cent and 14.17 per cent of beneficiary farmers said that poor quality materials/machinery are supplied.
