Title

STRUCTURAL ASSESSMENT AND ANALYSIS OF EXISTING RC JETTY STRUCTURE

Abstract

For transporting large quantities of goods and raw materials from one place to other, Jetties are one of the most important structures in coastal facilities which can be used. Some of the coastal facilities damaged during Bhuj earthquake and great Sumatra earthquake. Damaged and unserviceable port structures causes delay of export and import business. It directly affects the economy of the particular region in terms of business, employment & growth. A jetty is usually constructed of steel, concrete or rock. The type depends on foundation conditions and wave, climate and economic considerations. The present study is carried out to examine 27 years old existing jetty structure to ascertain its adequacy to withstand present service loading conditions including suggesting the remedial measures required if any. A comprehensive condition assessment of Jetty structure located at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, Navi Mumbai (India) is being undertaken to understand the present status of the structure, assessment of residual service life; so that to suggest strengthening/rehabilitation scheme. Detail visual inspection is done to map the distress with various degrees of damages/distresses of the piles, pile caps, beams, deck, expansion joints, wearing coat, and drainage system. Simple tests like tapping are also done with visual observations. Non Destructive evaluation is done to obtain the strength, homogeneity and integrity of the existing structures. The level of corrosion, depth of carbonation, salt ingress is also determined by various tests. The comprehensive study is presented in this paper.
