Title

STUDY OF GAMMA RADIATION INTERACTION CROSS-SECTION WITH HIGH ‘Z’AND HIGH DENSITY MATERIALS

Abstract

Since being most energetic among the electromagnetic spectrum, the interaction of gamma radiation with matter is quite different and interesting to study. By having much knowledge about the interaction of gamma radiation with matter can help us to apply these fundamentals in the various field of science like medical, experimental and particle physics. In the present work we have studied the interaction processes of gamma radiations of energies 511KeV and 662KeV with lead. In the present work we have studied the Cross section of interaction and Mean free path or relaxation length of gamma radiation in lead. For these studies we have used NaI(Tl) Scintillation Gamma ray Spectrometer which is coupled with multichannel analyzer for data acquisition. The values of Interaction Cross-section with lead for the given energies are obtained as 4.55 ×10-23 cm2 and 3.26 ×10-23 cm2 respectively. The relaxation length or Mean Free path for given energies are obtained as 0.67cm and 0.93cm respectively. This concludes that as energy of gamma radiation increases the mean free path increases and cross-section probability decreases.
