Title

A quasi-experimental study to evaluate the effectiveness of cryotherapy on level of pain related to arteriovenous fistula among patients undergoing haemodialysis at Dr. Vitthalrao Vikhe Patil, Pravara Rural Hospital, Loni.

Abstract

Background of study: chronic kidney disease is now the third most common non-communicable disease in India. Haemodialysis (HD) is the most frequently used renal replacement therapy with the arteriovenous (AV) Fistula. Patients undergoing haemodialysis are exposed to stress and pain due to approximately 300 punctures per year they receive for their arteriovenous fistula. Pain inflicted by insertion of large cannula into arteriovenous fistula on regular haemodialysis is a significant cause of concern for patients. Alleviation of the pain can improve acceptance of the procedure and quality of life among the patients. Objectives: To assess the existing level of arteriovenous fistula related pain among patients undergoing haemodialysis. To evaluate the effectiveness of cryotherapy on level of Arteriovenous Fistula puncture related pain among patients undergoing haemodialysis. To determine the association between study findings with their selected socio-demographic variables. Material and methods: A Quasi-Experimental study with one group pretest posttest design was used to evaluate the effectiveness of cryotherapy on level of pain related to arteriovenous fistula among patients undergoing haemodialysis at DRVVPPRH, Loni. The sample consisted of 30 patients with Chronic Renal Failure undergoing haemodialysis treatment with arteriovenous fistula. Sampling techniques used for the present study was non-probability method, purposive sampling technique. A proforma was prepared to collect the data. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyse the data according to objectives. Results: The pretest reveals that 77.66% of the study subjects had severe level of pain, followed by 16.66% of the study subjects had moderate level of pain and 6.66% of study subjects had mild level of pain before the intervention. The mean of posttest pain score 4.2 was less than that of mean of pretest pain score 7.03, it reveals significant reduction in level of pain. Calculated ‘t’ test value 9.71 was greater than tabulated t test value 1.69 at 0.05 level of significance, it proves statistically that the cryotherapy was effective in reducing arteriovenous fistula related pain. There is no significant association of posttest pain scores of the study subjects with their selected socio-demographic variables.
