Title

Study of sida cordifolia in management of senile dementia-a single case study

Abstract

The word smrutinasha and smritibhramsha denote loss of memory and failure to remember or recollect. Dementia is a chronic brain disorder in which there is progressive decline in acquired intellect, behavior and personality. Memory loss is the most common and usually the most common presenting complaint in patients of dementia. Senescence or biological aging is gradual deterioration of functional characteristics in living organisms. Decline in strength, vision, memory, locomotion, nutrition, immunity and homeostasis is directly related to increasing age. Prevalence of dementia increases with each decade for those aged more than fifty years. Increasing age is one of the risk factors in causes of dementia. According to Ayurveda lifespan has been divided into three parts i.e. balyawastha, madhyawastha and jirna or vriddhavastha. Growth, maintenance and decay are characteristics of these avastha respectively. Jara is nothing but general debility which is consequent on old age. Vriddhavastha is the process of decaying which manifest in the form of degenerative changes. According to acharyas vata dosha is most significant in vriddhavastha . Hence there are number of vaat vyadhi manifest during old age. According to Acharya charak sida cordifolia belongs to balya, bruhaniya, prajasthapan and madhur skandha and according to Acharya Sushrut it belongs to vatasamshaman gana. Sida cordifolia is madhur rasatmak, madhur vipak and sheeta virya, also it is laghu, snigdha and picchila. Because it is balya and bruhaniya and vatasamshman drug we have used bala as single drug therapy. A patient of age 72yrs was having chief complaint of smritibhramsh amd on further history taking and examination we found out that this is a case of dhatukshyajanya vata prakop. Hence we used sida cordifolia as a drug of treatment.
