Poverty is a social-economic phenomenon in which a section of society is unable to fulfil even its basic necessities of life. Humanity faces pains and miseries if it does not attain a subsistance level of such needs. During Five year plans, several programmes have been introduced to alleviate poverty in India. Yet there has been an increase in the number of poor persons in the country. Poverty reduction, or poverty alleviation, is set of measures, both economic and humanitarian, that are intended to permanently lift people out of poverty. A combination of growth and redistribution will deliver more poverty reduction than a focus on growth alone.
