Title

Socio-Economic Conditions of Women Workers in Building Construction Industry; With Special Reference to Karnataka

Abstract

Abstract *Murali N **Dr Parashurama K G In recent year, women participation in the labour force has risen in many developing countries accompanied by a shift in employment from agriculture to non-agriculture1. With the rapid economic growth one should expect further decline in the share of female employment in agriculture. Studies laid emphasis on gender discrimination that has become the major hurdle to the socio- economic empowerment of women. Women laborers in the construction sector make an important component of the women labor market in the informal sector. More than 31 million people work in the construction industry, second only to agricultural sector. More than 35 per cent of construction workers are women and they get poor remuneration and are discriminated in the payment of wages (ILO, 2001a). This study is an effort to identify gender discrimination among construction workers and identify the means of empowering women construction workers Key words; Agriculture, construction, Gender, Discrimination, etc. *Assistant Professor, Dept of Social Work, GFGC Kotapadukere, Udupi, mail Id muralibabumsw@gmail.com, Ph 9844186579. **Professor and Research guide Dept of Research and studies in social work, Tumkur University, mail Id p_ram_BDVT@rediffmail.com,
