Title

A New Ruthenium-Based Borotungstate POM as Photosensitizer: Synthesis and Characterization

Abstract

Ruthenium compounds have been selected as photosensitizers because of their unique combination of chemical stability, redox properties, excited state reactivity, luminescence emission and excited state lifetime. Keeping it in mind, a novel ruthenium (II) based Keggin-type organic-inorganic hybrid polyoxometalate [Ru(2,2'-bipy)3]2[HBW12O40] has been hydrothermally synthesized for the first time. The structure has been characterized by C–H–N elemental analyses, X-ray diffraction, FT-IR, UV Vis, luminescent spectra, and thermogravimetric analysis.. The X-ray single crystal study shows that the asymmetric unit of Keggin POM is composed of one [HBW12O40]4– anion flanked between two ruthenium-bipy cationic dye complexes. The POM anion [HBW12O40]4– is the prime building block which is associated with the [Ru(bipy)3]2+ counter ions by Coulombic forces and hydrogen bond interactions. Significantly, these combined spectroscopic studies show that this polyoxometalate-dye hybrid has strong electronic interactions between the cationic dye and polyanion units.
