Health Impact of Solid Waste Management on Sanitary Workers: with Special Reference to Palakkad Municipality

Authors

Abstract

Abstract In earlier days waste did not create many problems to the community as the quantity of waste generated was within the assimilative capacity of nature. Today the scenario is quite different and the urban environment all over the world posses serious threat that from excessive generation on solid waste. A major chunk of solid waste generated in cities and townships remain unattended, causing health hazards or nuisance to the inhabitants. The improper handling and disposal of these wastes render negative externality in the form of health damages and aesthetic impairment from. Generally solid waste management comes under the control of local authorities. The first line of defense against diseases was the attainment of environmental health, by a proper management of the solid wastes, the provision of safe drinking water and a proper disposal of human excreta. All these would block and prevent the disease causing organisms from entering the human body. WHO (1992) had stated that about 90 percent of the diseases occurring in the developing countries were due to from sanitary problems. The role of sanitary workers in maintaining environmental health cannot be underestimated. The country at present suffers from the triple burden of disease — the unfinished agenda of infectious diseases; the challenge of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), linked with lifestyle changes; and emergence of new pathogens causing epidemics and pandemics like (Covid-19).
