Stimulated by biological systems, self-healing polymers proved their materiality in many Industries, especially in the aviation sector. As these materials require less protection from indentation and provide better mechanical properties such as high fracture strength, high elastic modulus, and ability to mend the crack, at the scale of a micrometer make them promising materials to avoid unexpected catastrophic failure. This paper reviews the different recuperating mechanisms within self-healing polymers including a brief discussion on composites. Consequences of self-healing on various mechanical properties such as fracture, fatigue, impact, tensile strength, elastic modulus, and compression have been examined. Also, applications of self-healing material, especially in the aviation sector, and its future prospects have been discussed.
