Title

TRADITIONAL AGROFORESTRY SYSTEMS FOR EFFECTIVE LAND MANAGEMENT – LESSONS FROM INDIAN LANDSCAPES

Abstract

India is basically an agrarian country and known for its traditional practices in agriculture and related activities. Agroforestry is one such age-old system of land management practice, which includes structure, function, socio-economic attributes and ecological services. Indian sub-continent with varied agro-climatic regions has representation from arid, semi-arid, humid and sub humid tropics which has their own uniqueness of upholding both the native tree species and agriculture crops in the same land management unit. Agroforestry is now branded with a series of benefits to the farming community while safe guarding the environment and sustainable development. In addition to this, the ecosystem services from the agroforestry landscapes are also gaining more importance. According to the IPCC, the present study is an attempt to document the traditional agroforestry systems, its uniqueness and land management ecosystem services applicable to the current scenario. Maximizing the productivity and benefits to meet the rising demands for food and other ecosystem services for the wellbeing of the society has been identified as the major problem for sustainable landscapes in Agriculture and related sector in India.
