Title

A study on two body abrasive wear behaviour of particulate filled GFRP composites

Abstract

As advanced engineering materials, composites are used in many applications where high wear resistance is required, these include electrical contact brushes, cylinder liners, artificial joints, and helicopter blades. The importance of tribological properties convinced many researchers to study the wear behaviour and to improve the wear resistance of polymeric composites. The mechanical and two-body abrasive wear behaviour of GFRP composites with Al2O3/TiO2 particulate filler and without filler was studied. Two-body abrasive wear studies were carried out using a pin-on-disc wear tester under multi-pass condition against the waterproof silicon carbide abrasive paper. Keeping the grit size of SiC paper constant (320 grit size), the material was tested against a combination of loads, speeds and filler material. The results included comparisons of wear rates for different parameters as well as effects of hardness of the composite. Design of experiment was used to layout experimental run order and further carry out the result analysis using ANOVA. It was concluded that filler and load parameters play a significant role in the reduction of wear rate. Vickers hardness test of the specimen was carried out.
