Title

HYPSOMETRIC ANALYSIS OF PRAVRA RIVER BASIN USING OPEN SOURCE GIS AND ASTER DEM

Abstract

GIS aided hypsometric analysis of the river basin is generally used to understand the stages of geomorphic evolution. DEM is used for characterizing the topography and to derive the stream network, ridge line, thereby to study the landscape within the watershed area. DEMs from satellite imageries like ASTER, Cartosat etc. are becoming popular with wide applications. The focus of present study was identifying the growth stage of Pravara river basin based on the shape of the hypsometric curve and hypsometric integral value. The Geological stages of watershed and its maturity (Youth, Mature and Old) is determined from hypsometric analysis of basin and it is also indicates the susceptibility of watershed to erosion. The primary objective of this study is to delineate watershed and analysis the hypsometric curve of ASTER-DEM. ASTER DEM product was use to prepare elevation contour. The hypsometric integral was estimated using elevation-relief ratio method. Remote Sensing and Geographical Information System provides an advanced and accurate tool to obtain hypsometric information. Elevation-Relief method for hypsometric integral was accurate, less cumbersome and easy to calculate within GIS Environment. The study was conducted using Open source Geographic information system (GIS). QGIS which is a free and open-source cross-platform desktop geographic information system application that supports viewing, editing, and analysis of geospatial data.
