This article explores the intricate relationship between religious factors and the pre-modern state apparatus in the Kingdom of Manipur, focusing on the strategic use of religion by the rulers to maintain control and legitimacy. The author delves into the role of the king as both the political and religious authority, examining how the adoption of various religious programs and the promotion of traditional Meitei religion contributed to the divinity status of the rulers. The paper discusses the incorporation of myth and religion as effective tools for governance and the establishment of social control. Additionally, it highlights the transition to Hinduism as a state religion and its impact on the state apparatus, including the forced conversion of the populace, internal conflicts, and the decline of traditional values. The study underscores the complexities of using religion as a statecraft device and its influence on social, cultural, and political dynamics in pre-modern Manipur.
