Abstract

The evolution of Green Accounting in India represents a significant paradigm shift in economic thinking, aiming to integrate environmental sustainability into traditional accounting frameworks. This theoretical research paper delves into the landscape of Green Accounting in India up to December 2015, exploring the key developments, challenges, and the role it plays in the country's economic framework. Beginning with an overview of the global environmental concerns that prompted the need for green accounting, the paper then transitions to the Indian context. The analysis includes the inception and development of green accounting principles and practices, highlighting the milestones achieved by policymakers and institutions in recognizing the importance of environmental conservation within economic frameworks. The paper emphasizes the incorporation of environmental externalities into national accounting systems, reflecting the true costs of economic activities on the environment. Through a critical examination of India's efforts, it assesses the effectiveness of these measures in fostering sustainable development. Statistical data up to December 2015 will be provided to illustrate the extent of environmental degradation and the economic impact, emphasizing the urgency for green accounting practices. The study also investigates the role of various stakeholders, including the government, businesses, and civil society, in promoting and hindering the evolution of green accounting. Understanding the dynamics between these entities is crucial for comprehending the broader socio-economic implications of adopting green accounting practices. References will be cited throughout the paper to substantiate key points and provide a comprehensive overview of the existing literature on green accounting in India up to December 2015.
