Title

Lallup system

Abstract

The article "Lallup: A Socio-Economic and Political Organization" by Heisnam Nilkant Singh explores the Lallup system, a traditional socio-economic and political organization in the Meitei kingdom of Manipur. It delves into the origins, structure, and functions of the Lallup system, which was introduced during the reign of King Loyamba in 1110 A.D. The study highlights the dual role of Lallup as both a military and economic institution, designed to utilize the labor of male subjects aged 17 to 60 for the state's benefit. The system required these men to serve the kingdom for ten days out of every forty, engaging in public works, military service, and other essential tasks without monetary compensation. The article discusses the organization of the kingdom into six divisions, known as "Lups," and the allocation of specific duties within these divisions. It examines how the Lallup system facilitated economic development through the reclamation of cultivable land and the construction of infrastructure, while also serving as a means of social control and political mobilization. The system's impact on the relationship between the ruling class and the common people, particularly in terms of labor exploitation and state power consolidation, is also analyzed. The study provides a comprehensive overview of the Lallup system's role in shaping Manipur's historical and cultural landscape, from its inception to its decline and eventual abolition in 1892. It argues that while the system was often labelled as forced labor, it was integral to the kingdom's socio-economic fabric and political stability. The article concludes by reflecting on the system's legacy and its significance in understanding the historical governance of Manipur.
