Title

“A Sculptural Study of the Costumes During the period of Hoysala

Authors

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to present my observations with regard to “A Sculptural Study of the Hoysala Costumes". A detailed study of Hoysala sculptures reveal social and cultural aspects of the Hoysala period (11 c. A.D. to middle of 14 c. A.D.). One of the important aspects of the social life during this time was the costumes or dress of the people. The sculptures of this period give us an idea of the various modes of clothing and costumes popular among the masses, the wealthy and the nobility of the times. The variety in the manufacture and the use of clothes which suited the occasion, season, age and sex shows a sense of sophistication. Garments were made from cotton, silk and wool. Fashions in costumes are as interesting to observe as any ot aspect of human self-expression. The tastes and tendencies of an age are clearly indicated by the type of clothes which are depicted in Hoysala temples. From this point of view the sculptural representation of costumes in the panels, reliefs and sculptures of the Hoysala temples are interesting and varied.
