Title

Empirical Design of Mine Support System: a Case Study of SCCL Mines

Abstract

The bord and pillar system is the predominant underground coal mining method in India. A critical challenge in this method is maintaining strata control at the face, which significantly impacts both safety and productivity, especially when using underground loaders and dumpers. According to the existing Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS) guidelines, the Systematic Support Rules (SSR) must be followed at depillaring faces, regardless of the immediate roof rock's type or competence (as per CMR, 1957). However, these rules can sometimes result in either excessively high support density or insufficient support, leading to roof failures that can cause significant loss of life and materials. It was therefore attempted to develop a design of support system considering different geo-mining condition using empirical system.
