Abstract: Financial inclusion is an integral part of India’s developmental policy. Various measures have been undertaken by the RBI and Government of India periodically, to increase the level of financial inclusion. Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) is one such measure. PMJDY was announced by the Prime Minister on 15th Aug 2014 and launched in the country on 28th Aug 2014. It has the objective of covering all households in the country with banking facilities and having a bank account for each household. With the bank account, every household gains access to banking and credit facilities. PMJDY is supporting the government in achieving the objective of universal financial inclusion. Lack of access of financial service hinders the growth of the country. The previous government had also emphasized on financial inclusion but the focus was on villages rather than households. PMJDY focussed on all households irrespective of rural or urban areas. Financial accessibility as promised by the PMJDY would certainly help to generate higher savings. Financial inclusion become more relevant for rural economy because of its population size, potential market and changing income levels and consumption patterns. The objective of this paper is to comprehend whether the Financial Inclusion purpose is served through PMJDY and it also focuses on role played by nationalised banks at Vittal Town Panchayath. This study is based on primary and secondary data.
