Title

WITTGENSTEIN'S VIEWS ON AUGUSTINEAN THEORY OF LANGUAGE

Abstract

St. Augustine states that we learn language by seeing our elders use certain names for certain objects, we see which words are used for which objects. Again, on seeing their expressions, tone of voice etc. we know their state of mind. Thus, on the one hand a word means an object, on the other hand it expresses that state of mind, or the thought of the person. However, Wittgenstein criticises the Augustinean theory on the grounds that, it concentrates excessively on names, and ignores other kinds of words which are used very differently from names. Augustine only thought of nouns, and left other kinds of words to take care of themselves. Thus, according to Wittgenstein, this theory has a very narrow scope.
