Title

Quantitative Analysis and Observations of Energy Consumption in Sustainable Buildings: A Case Study Approach

Abstract

This paper presents a comprehensive quantitative analysis of energy consumption in sustainable buildings through detailed calculations, simulation comparisons, and field observations. Focusing on a case study of a mid-size commercial building located in a temperate climate, the study employs standard heat transfer equations, building energy simulation data, and actual metered energy usage to assess heating, cooling, and overall electrical loads. Calculations based on the building’s envelope properties, occupancy schedules, and local weather conditions are compared with on-site measurements to determine efficiency gaps. The results reveal that the simulated annual energy consumption of 150 kWh/m² closely approximates the observed value of 165 kWh/m²—with monthly variations highlighting opportunities for operational improvements. This research underscores the importance of rigorous energy modeling combined with empirical observations to inform sustainable design strategies and policy recommendations.
