Extensive depletion of fossil fuels, environmental concerns and increasing cost of transmission/distribution expansion result increasing use of Distributed Generators (DG), which is being sought after as a supplement and an alternative to conventional energy sources. Non optimal planning of DG leads increased power losses, poor voltage profile, problems of stability and protection. An optimal and strategic placement is, therefore, done using various optimisation techniques. The DG integration impacts power flow and voltage conditions of the system. These impacts can be both positive as well as negative. The paper evaluates various impacts of DG on the ecology, economics and technical aspects on the distribution network.
