Keoladeo National Park, Bharatpur is an important wintering ground of water birds and is famous for its large flocks of resident breeding birds. As it is situated in the middle of Central Asian migratory flyway and has a regulated water supply from nearby reserviours and seasonal rivers, large congregations of ducks, geese, coots, pelicans etc arrive here in great numbers in winter. It was developed in a natural depression wetland that was managed as a duck shooting reserve at the end of the 19th century and was a traditional hunting spot for the Maharajas of Bharatpur. Since it was declared a National Park in 1982, hunting has ceased in the area. A great wildlife oasis situated in the midst of densly populated suburb, Keoladeo National Park has a mosaic of grasslands, woodlands and wetlands in less than 3000 hectare area.
