Exploring the Theme of Love and Loss in Mohan Rakesh's One Day in Ashada

Abstract

Literature is a powerful tool for understanding the emotions of love, heartache, and turmoil. The theme of love and loss is a universal and timeless topic that has been explored by poets throughout the ages. Romance, such as Dushanth and Shakuntala, Romeo and Juliet, reflects the reckless nature of young love and the societal pressures that can obstruct it. Bhāsa.'s “Svapnavasavadattam" showcases love triumphing over life, misunderstandings, class prejudice, and personal failings. On the other hand, literature is filled with tales of loss, showcasing the resilience of the human spirit. Hemingway's "A Farewell to Arms" and Joan Didion's "The Year of Magical Thinking" teach us about mourning, healing, and finding ways to live with loss. These stories emphasize that love is to risk loss, but avoiding love to avoid loss is not a way to live at all. Mohan Rakesh written in a such way it marked by a vivid imagery and an intense emotional depth, evoking powerful feelings of longing, desire, and grief Mohan Rakesh's play "Ashadh Ka Ek Din" (One Day in Ashada) looks into the topic of unhappy romantic affections, accentuating the complex and poignant emotions of love that remain unhappy and unreciprocated. The play's central theme is the unfulfilled love between Mallika and Kalidas.Mallika's unfulfilled love for Kalidas drives the plot frontward and highlights the pain and yearning that may result from unrequited love. This theme examines the experience of unrequited love in interpersonal interactions by significance the regrets, struggles, and epiphany that people may never see their love reciprocal. This problem is essential to the play's storyline and character development since it explores the rich emotional depth and complexity of unfulfilled love dreams.
