Text as a Pretext: Changing Role of English Teachers in the New Millennium

Abstract

The demands and expectations of the New Age learners from the English teachers has resulted in the re-thinking of the way English is taught in the Indian classrooms. The present day English teachers teaching to a new generation of learners are compelled to impart knowledge distinctly and differently from that of the earlier times. English teachers are expected to play varied roles to cater to the varied needs of the present day learners. It is inevitable for the present generation English teachers to adapt to the changing times by adopting new methods of teaching in order to go beyond the curriculum and use the text as a pretext to serve the real purpose of education without losing touch with the present day realities.
