Affective computing deals with the interaction between human and computers which focuses gathering of data from the face, speech and body languages to measure human emotions. Human- Computer interaction (HCI) is an important aspect in the modern digital environment, where major decisions are carried out by the computer with human intervention. Human expressions can convey a lot of information visually. This paper presents an overview of the different facial expression recognition methods by highlighting the main components in a facial expression recognition system. The whole process is concentrated on three main stages namely face detection, feature extraction and classification.

Local Binary Pattern, Principal Component Analysis, Support Vector Machines, Hidden Markov Model.
