The term plantation crop refers to those crops cultivated on an extensive scale in an area, owned and managed by an individual or a company. The crops include rubber, coconut, areca nut, oil palm, palmyra, cashew, etc. These are high-value commercial crops of greater importance and play a vital role in the economic development of a country. These crops are export potential, employment generation, and poverty alleviation tools in the rural area. The coconut, cashew nut, areca nut, oil palm, and palmyra come under the Ministry of Agriculture while rubber, tea, and coffee is dealt by the Ministry of Commerce. Plantation crops help in conserving the soil and ecosystem. Ex: Tea, and coffee plantations grown in hilly tracks having slopes obstruct the soil erosion. Cashew nut cultivation in waste and barren lands contains soil erosion. It promotes agricultural and research development.
