Title

EDUCATION AND SOCIAL CONSCIOUSNESS: A SOCIOLOGICAL STUDY ON UNIVERSITY STUDENTS OF DAKSHINA KANNADA

Abstract

Education serves many purposes beyond merely imparting knowledge. Its goal extends beyond the individual’s personal growth to encompass the well-being of the society to which they belong. The undergraduate years, in particular, are a crucial phase in a student’s life when academic learning intersects with exposure to diverse cultures, perspectives, and provides an opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of the social realities surrounding them. The traditional Indian education system, historically focused on rote learning, exam-centric evaluations, and career preparation, has gradually recognized the importance of addressing broader social issues such as inequality, injustice, gender discrimination, caste bias, human rights violations, and other societal concerns. Today, the emphasis is not just on theoretical discussions but also on providing real-life exposure to these issues, fostering a greater sense of social responsibility. This shift is evident in numerous higher education institutions across the country, where students are encouraged to engage with and understand the complexities of the world around them. This article looks into the social consciousness among university students (undergraduates and postgraduates) studying in Christian institutions of Dakshina Kannada. A questionnaire was used to gather data from 472 students studying in five Christian colleges. Through descriptive statistics, the level of social consciousness was determined. The p-value obtained by using Fisher exact test showed an association between social consciousness with a few variables.
