Title

Silence as Communication: A Study of Osho's Philosophy of Discourse, Storytelling, and Transformative Communication

Abstract

Communication is generally understood as the effective transmission of ideas through language; however, certain communicators transcend conventional rhetorical practices by transforming communication into an experience of intellectual, emotional, and spiritual awakening. Among such figures, Osho (1931–1990) occupies a distinctive position for his unique integration of discourse, storytelling, meditation, and silence. Unlike traditional public speakers whose primary objective is persuasion, Osho regarded communication as a means of awakening human consciousness rather than influencing public opinion. His discourses combined philosophy, psychology, literature, history, religion, humour, and personal anecdotes to create an interactive communicative environment that encouraged listeners to move beyond intellectual understanding toward self-awareness. This article examines Osho's communication philosophy by analysing three interconnected dimensions of his discourse: his rejection of conventional oratory in favour of authentic dialogue, his use of storytelling as a transformative pedagogical strategy, and his employment of silence as an integral communicative technique. Drawing upon theories of communication, rhetoric, educational philosophy, and contemplative studies, the article argues that Osho redefined the very nature of public speaking by demonstrating that effective communication involves not merely the exchange of words but the creation of reflective spaces where listeners encounter themselves. Ultimately, Osho's communicative legacy illustrates that genuine discourse is measured not by rhetorical brilliance alone but by its capacity to inspire self-reflection, inner transformation, and enduring human understanding.
