The concept of Primary Health Centre (PHC) is not new to India. It is the Bhore Committee in 1946 which gave the concept of a PHC as a basic health unit to provide as close to the people as possible, an integrated curative and preventive health care to the rural population . It is the cornerstone of rural healthcare. In the present scenario where there is rise in communicable diseases there is an urgent need of the community to prevent the rising diseases. Preventing diseases in one way keep people healthy. Even the policymakers and employers has also viewed that prevention improves worker health and productivity. With respect to this, the article explains the role of health workers of PHCs in preventing diseases. The article in the first part focuses on the visit of the different categories of PHCs health workers to the households, and the second part focuses on the outreach services the health workers provide in the prevention process.
