Women have always been a marginal section of the society. However, within the upper strata of Kerala society in the 19th and the early 20th century, two different communities, namely the Namboodiris and Nairs practiced different set of traditions and conventions that in one case marginalized their women (Namboodiris), while in the other, empowered them to an extent (Nairs). However, despite such variations in practices, women have continued to confirm to the broader patriarchal construct as was prevalent in the Kerala society of the period.
