Title

Scope of Modification in Lifestyle in Care of Patients of Essential Hypertension

Abstract

Hypertension which is characterized by an increase in the arterial pressure of the individual is the silent killer of mankind as it is asymptomatic in nature but has severe effects. Hypertension may be primary or essential (about 95 percent ) having no specific underlying cause or it may be secondary to specific underlying disorders such as renal disease, endocrine disorder etc. World wide, raised blood pressure is estimated to cause 7.5 million deaths, about 12.8 percent of all annual deaths and accounts for 57 million DALYs or 3.7 percent of total DALYs. It is a major risk factor for coronary heart disease and ischemic as well as hemorrhagic stroke. As hypertension is an instrumental disease invented recently with the help of modern diagnostic tools, the direct reference of this disease is unavailable in Ayurvedic classical texts but due to resemblance of clinical features to some extent, it has been given different nomenclatures such as Uchcha Raktachapa,Raktagata Vata, Raktavritta Vata,Pranavritta Vyana and Shleshmavritta Vyana by various research scholars but these correlations are far from complete and probably collectively represent the possible pathophysiological pathways of hypertension as per Ayurvedic concepts. Various studies have demonstrated that modern lifestyle as well as stress plays an important role in pathogenesis of essential hypertension. Lifestyle measures effective in lowering blood pressure along with reducing cardiovascular risk include restriction of salt intake, reduction of alcohol intake, correction of obesity, taking regular physical exercise and increasing consumption of fruits and vegetables. Ayurveda advocates proper Ahar-Vihar in the form of Ashtaharvidhi Visheshayatanani, Dwadasha Ashanapravicharana, Dinacharya, Ratricharya, Ritucharya and Sadvritta.. Yoga having a holistic approach is effective not only in promotion of health but it also has preventive and curative potential. Yogic practices like Shavasana, Yoga Nidra, Dhyana and Pranayama have well established anti -stress role and therefore effective as lifestyle measure in prevention and management of hypertension. The present article is an attempt to explore the role of modification in lifestyle in care of patients of essential hypertension.
