Title

EFFECT OF PROCESS PARAMETERS ON MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF FRTICTION STIR WELDED DISSIMILAR ALUMINIUM ALLOYS

Abstract

Aluminium-based alloys are interesting structural and functional materials. They have been found in a wide range of applications in automotive and aerospace industries because of their lightweight, high stiffness and strength, high thermal stability.In the present work, the effect of process parameters on joining of AA6063 and AA5083 Aluminium alloy during friction stir welding (FSP) was studied. The microstructure, hardness and tensile strength of fiction stir welded aluminium alloy plates have been investigated. Scanning electron microscopy was used to characterise the microstructures of the weld nugget, the heat affected zone (HAZ), thermo-mechanical affected zone (TMAZ) and the base materials. The welding produces fine recrystallized grains in the stir zone and recovered grains in the thermo-mechanically affected zone. The rotational speed was varied from 800 rpm to 1400rpm. Welding speed varied from 50 mm/min to 80 mm/min.The mechanical properties were obtained using tensile, impact and hardness tests. Adequate tensile strength and Impact strength can be achieved utilizing a combination of tool rotational speed 1400 rpm and low speed of welding around 80 mm/min.
