Design: A cross sectional community based study. Study setting: Thirty clusters selected through probability proportion to size(PPS) sampling in selected blocks of Hazaribagh , Jharkhand. Study partitipants: Children aged6-12 years, and their guardians. Study tool:Quantitative and qualitative methodology using a pretested questionnaire. Result: Total goitre rate (TGR) was 4.07%,Median urinary iodine level was 87.5mcg/L indicating mild iodine deficiency. The proportion of individuals with urinary iodine level less than 50mcg/L was 31.5%. 77.8% of the household were found to be consuming adequately iodised salt as measured by titration(greater than 15ppm). Only 63.7%of respondents knew about iodine fortification of edible salt.Out of these only 22.7% could give correct reasons for iodisation. The source of their knowledge were TV, Radio, Newspaper in 18.3% of population. Only 6.8% and 13.5% of the respondents had correct knowledge about importance of iodine for pregnant women and children respectively.67.7%of respondents had no particular choice of salt.41.8% store salt in plastic jars without lid,and12% of respondents keep in the same packet.57.8%of the respondents store salt above the domestic oven.
