Title

Hydrological Implications of Land Use/ Land Cover changes: A Case Study of Delhi

Abstract

Hydrological response of a watershed is very much function of meteorological and catchment characteristics and land use/ land cover (LULC) is significant one. LULC is a dynamic phenomenon in the urban areas and seriously changes the hydrological response of urbanized catchments which include increase in peak runoff, reduction in time to peak less groundwater recharge and more pollution which may causeslot of hydrological problems like flooding, soil erosion and contamination of receiving water bodies. Therefore, investigating the effectLULC changes due to urbanization on hydrological behavior an urbanized catchment is very vital to mitigate or adapt the adverse hydrological consequences. Geo-spatial technologies and hydrological models can be used for such investigation at desired spatial and temporal resolutions. The Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) is one of such a widely used physically distributed model for modelling of hydrological response of any watershed. Presented work is aimed to examine effect of changes in watershed characteristics on hydrologic response of an urbanisedwatershed in Delhi between old railway bridge in Delhi and Okhla barrage in UP, India. The model result indicates significant changes in rainfall-runoff due to change in watershed characteristics like LULC. Study has been found to be useful for researchers and authorities dealing with storm water management in optimum planning of drainage network
