Abstract
Unani is an age old traditional system of medicines which utilizes herb, minerals and animal products in treating diseases. Medicinal plants have a vital role to preserve the human life. Herbs are considered as God’s gift to human beings in the form of natural medicines. In the last few decades there has been an exponential growth in the field of herbal medicines. It is getting popularized in developing and developed countries owing to its natural origin and lesser side effects. One such medicinal plant is Ricinus communis Linn. is commonly known as Castor, it is a species of flowering plant in the spurge family Euphorbiaceae which contains nearly about 300 genera and 7500 species. Amongst all, the Ricinus communis or castor plant has high traditional and medicinal value for maintain the disease free healthy life, and found throughout India, mostly growing wild on waste land. All parts of plant are important viz. bark, leaves, flowers, seeds, oil etc. Oil of this plant is extensively used in Unani, Ayurveda, Homeopathic and Allopathic systems of medicines as catharthic. In Unani system of medicine this plant used as purgative, resolvent, anti-arthritis, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, emetic, emmenagogue, antidote for Dhatura poisoning, anti-dysenteric etc, where as the plant possess beneficial effects such as antioxidant, antiulcer, immunomodulatory, antidiabetic, hepatoprotective, antimicrobial, central nervous system stimulant, and wound healing, anti fertility etc and possess many other medicinal properties. All these uses are due to the prescence of certain phytoconstituents like flavonoids, saponins, glycosides, alkaloids, steroids etc. The aim of present article is to explore the medicinal importance of the plant Ricinus communis Linn.
