Abstract
Kannada folk literature is a comprehensive expression of the lives, culture, rituals, beliefs, social relationships, economic activities, and lived experiences of the people of Karnataka. Unlike written literature, it has been transmitted from generation to generation through the oral traditions of the common people. Folk songs, stories, proverbs, riddles, *Lavani*s, *Tripadi*s, *Sobane* songs, lullabies, grinding-stone songs, devotional songs (*Devara Pada*), and ritual songs represent the richness of Kannada folk literature. However, significant changes have occurred in the nature and modes of transmission of folk literature due to the rapid growth of modernity, urbanization, industrialization, globalization, the expansion of education, the influence of science and technology, and the widespread use of digital media. Although traditional oral traditions are weakening in some areas, new media have created fresh opportunities for the preservation and dissemination of folk literature. Thus, in the context of modernity, it is essential to understand Kannada folk literature not merely in terms of its destruction or decline, but as a cultural heritage that is undergoing transformation. This article analyzes the impact of modernity, the changing nature of folk literature, the need for preservation, the role of digital media, and future possibilities.
