Title

The works of J.K Rowling and Tolkien - An illustration of beasts

Abstract

Abstract Two of the most celebrated fantasy writers of our times - Tolkien and Rowling - have produced two of the most classic works in the genre of fantasy fiction in English literature in the form of Lord of The Rings (LOTR) and Harry Potter (HP) series, respectively. This paper looks at the various characters which contributed towards the fantasy world that they created, which have and continue to enthrall millions of children and adults alike, becoming more famous through movies and genre defining works. Ranging from the mediocre characters and support beasts, they vary in terms of their role, depth to the story and the ways in which they influence the happenings in the overall story. One of the defining features in both the fantasy series is characterization of the beasts and the roles played by them in the series. This defines how the story revolves around the character defined for each beast. This paper seeks to have a deep understanding of the most important beast characters in each of HP and LOTR. This is important in order to appreciate how they leave a bigger imprint in the minds of the readers. The paper then seeks to elucidate and compare the characters, and how there have been deep running impressions on minds on common lore and folklore that there is a long running debate on which is the best among them. But as the paper’s analysis would show, the contribution of both these two fantasy series is indispensable in enriching the fantasy literature. Be it the greater influences that they have imparted, sources from which they have been influenced, movies and media which have influenced, the world that they have succeeded in building - they have been major influences in many years to come, hooking both the young and old alike with their fantasies and mysticism's.
